Steppe rue, also known as Peganum harmala, Syrian Rue, pagan rue, Syrian rue, harmal or wild thyme, is a plant with a long history of use in folk medicine and spiritual rituals in the regions of Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. In these cultures, rut pagan is used for protective rituals, including as a substance with purifying properties and warding off negative energies. The smoke produced by burning the seeds of this plant is often used in rituals of "sifting," or cleansing spaces or people, which is somewhat reminiscent of the use of white sage in Native American traditions.
